What the crane company will ask you

Have these answers ready and the quote comes back faster and closer to the final bill.

  1. What it is and what it weighs, plus anything it sits on. A spec sheet or a photo of the nameplate helps.
  2. Its size, and where it is now: on a truck, on the ground or on a roof.
  3. Where it has to go: how high, and how far from where the truck can park. That distance is the reach.
  4. Where the truck can park: street, driveway or lot, and whether the ground is firm and level for the outriggers.
  5. Anything overhead: power lines, trees, roof edges and signs.
  6. The date and time, and whether the lift has to be early or on a weekend.
  7. Who rigs the load and who signals, your crew or theirs.
  8. Street permit: if the truck has to sit in the street, who pulls it.
Diagram of a crane lift: the reach from the crane to the load, the height of the roof, the weight of the load, outriggers on firm ground, and 20 feet of clearance from power lines. Crane service or bare rental?

Crane with an operator

The crane company brings the crane and a certified operator, sets up and runs the lift. You pay by the hour, usually with a 4-hour minimum. This is what most jobs need.

Bare rental

You rent only the crane, usually by the month. You supply a certified operator, riggers, fuel and insurance, and inspect the crane before every shift. Contractors on long jobs use this.

Questions

Is this a crane company?

No. Crane Rental MN is a directory of crane companies that serve the Twin Cities, run by Kovar Digital LLC. Contact any company directly. If you're not sure who to call, send us the lift and we pass it to one company that serves your area.

How did you find these companies?

We searched Google Maps for crane rental and crane service in 24 Twin Cities and nearby cities, then checked each company on its own website on November 3, 2026. We list companies that run mobile cranes, boom trucks or tower cranes and are based in the Twin Cities area or say they work here. Overhead crane shops, towing companies and big equipment rental chains are not listed.

Do companies pay to be listed?

No. Every listing is free and shown in alphabetical order or by distance. If a company ever pays for a spot, it is marked Featured.

A listing is wrong or missing. How do I fix it?

Use "Request a correction" on the company's page, or email [email protected]. Companies can claim their listing the same way.

Is the quote form free?

Yes. You never pay us. We pass your request to one company that serves your area, and crane companies may pay us for that introduction.

Do crane companies take small jobs and home projects?

Many do: hot tubs, trusses for a garage, a tree over the house. Most have a minimum charge, so small lifts still cost a few hundred dollars or more.

How much does a crane cost per hour?

Published 2025 rate sheets put a boom truck with an operator at $155 to $225 an hour and a 50 to 60 ton crane at $225 to $275. Most companies bill a 4-hour minimum. See crane rental cost.

Do crane operators need a license in Minnesota?

Minnesota requires a certificate from a nationally recognized, accredited program to operate a crane of 5 tons or more on a construction site, renewed every five years. The state does not issue its own crane license.

Do I need a permit for a crane?

If the crane or boom truck has to sit on a street, alley or sidewalk, yes: Minneapolis and St. Paul both require an obstruction permit. Near MSP or the St. Paul Downtown Airport, a tall crane can also need FAA notice. See Minneapolis and St. Paul.
